Boulder residents bash proposed RTD cutbacks

The unhappy Boulderites who packed a Monday public hearing on bus service cutbacks told Regional Transportation District officials that they're going in the wrong direction.Speakers said cutbacks to popular routes, such as Boulder's Skip route, will decrease ridership at a time when the RTD should be working to bolster it. Fewer riders, turned off by the inconvenience of longer wait times and fewer routes, will not only mean less money from fares, but also less public support, speakers warned."The cuts appear to impact the maximum number of people," said David Cook, manager of the University of Colorado at Boulder's transportation options Kamagra Oral Jelly Uk Cheap program. "It seems radical and drastic."The proposed cuts to Boulder area bus routes would begin in 2012. RTD plans to make $12 million in service cuts next year, including many affecting routes in Boulder and Broomfield counties, to address a budget shortfall. At Monday's public hearing, city of Boulder, University of Colorado and Boulder County officials all gave the cuts a thumbs down. So did state Rep. Claire Levy, a Democrat who lives in Boulder."It seems your actual goal is to discourage riders," she Generic Levitra said. "You need to rethink your whole approach. You need to have a bus system that encourages as many riders as possible."One proposal that has the potential to affect up to 650,000 riders a year making it one of the biggest daily service reductions in the entire RTD proposal is to decrease the service frequency for Boulder's Skip route. The change would mean that the Skip line which starts at Lee Hill Road in the north, travels along the University of Colorado campus and ends in a loop near Fairview High School would be available every 10 minutes instead of every seven minutes. RTD estimates that measure would save about $138,000 a year. The Jump route from Boulder to Lafayette would also have the wait time between buses increase from 10 to 15 minutes, and midday trips east of 111th Street and into Erie would be discontinued."The Jump from Erie can be a lifeline to Boulder medical appointments," said resident Ira Liss.Another unpopular proposal was to Route 225, which would be merged with Route 203. The changes would increase wait times for buses travelling from the Boulder Transit Center to 55th Street from 15 minutes to 30 minutes, along with increasing wait times to the East Boulder Recreation Center from 30 minutes to an hour.Deborah Wagner, a graduate student at CU, said Cheap Cialis Uk wait times already are long during peak travel hours because the buses are packed with students and people commuting to work."If you make it only every half an hour, it's going to get worse," she said.Several people at Monday's meeting questioned why RTD is making changes that impact some of the most used routes, urging RTD to instead focus on routes with low ridership or to make reductions in areas that haven't made the same commitment to public transportation infrastructure.
